When patients call for help, certified nursing assistants are the initial responders, where they need to lift recovering or help ill patients to walk, change clothes and get to the toilet. Certain times, nursing assistants support patients with the prescribed respiratory or physical therapy workouts. In long-term care facilities, certified nursing assistants assist in exercising paralytic and coma patients.
The basic task that a CNA must perform includes providing a patient with enough exercise. They must assist patients in simple exercises, walking and getting in and out of the bed. Certified nursing assistants are also responsible for patients in times of surgery. They are charged with applying dressing and reposition patients to bedsores. Nursing assistants that are certified must be keen in observing the condition of the patient, since they will have to report such information to the nurse. Since nurses cannot stay too long with the patients, CNAs are considered the eyes and ears to take note of what the patients are feeling and what their needs might be.
Along with all the physical needs that a certified nursing assistant should perform, they must also be able to support a patient emotionally since they typically have the most contact with them. CNAs are supposed to be caring and should come equipped with strong communication skills. They should be able to converse with the patients and must know how to empathize and assure. Good arithmetic skills and the ability to lift heavy objects are some skills that a certified nursing assistant must possess.

Here, they act as caretakers for patients who show recovery from conditions or those having disabling conditions since long. Overall, a certified nursing assistant is required to undertake certain vital responsibilities, which call for basic patient care.
Choosing a career as a CNA may prove to be a stressful occupation, but at the end of the day it is one of the most fulfilling careers. Helping people when they are sick and/or intolerable is quite rewarding, and seeing people get well creates a feeling of achievement for someone who has been there for them alongside the difficulties.
