How To Consolidate Credit Card Debt

Credit cards are easily accessible, that’s one of the things that makes them so attractive to so many people. For instance, the average American reportedly has about four credit cards registered in their name. Of course, one of the harbingers of having multiple credit cards is the sometimes inevitable crux of falling into the black hole that is credit card debt.

If you do happen to find yourself struggling with credit card debt, deep in the throes of helplessness, consolidating credit card debt might be a helpful option. This can help you make those monthly payments easier to meet and cheaper.

Credit Cards are hard to refuse

One of the most attractive elements of credit cards is that they are accessible to almost anyone.

Beyond that, credit cards often come with incentives. Believe it or not, banks and financial institutions want you to us their cards and end up owing them money so that you have to pay interest on it later. But jokes aside, credit cards typically come with cash rewards, major store discounts and free airplane points and mileage.

Let’s face it, it’s pretty hard to refuse the offer of taking on more credit. Banks send out offers pretty often and more times than not, people bite. The lure of extra credit is hard to satisfy. It’s pretty easy to figure out exactly why our society is so dept dependent.

But that’s the issue, right? One card doesn’t end up satisfying our credit needs, and we end up eagerly throwing credit cards on the table. It’s hard for even the most steadfast customers to resist opening additional accounts. The money is offered and doesn’t cost anything at the time, making it so hard to reject.

And then, of course, the debt accumulates. With multiple credit cards, it’s harder to track expenses and continue to make payments. Just when you’re almost done paying off one credit card, along comes another, another one strikes and you’re back to the basics once again. Getting out of that debt while running several cards is nearly impossible, and forgetting payments is very easy to do. If you start missing multiple payments, you could be in a lot of trouble as it adds up with the different cards until it’s just an unstoppable credit mess of owing.

Facts have shown that people with multiple credit cards often spend more than what they typically make in earnings in a month. They don’t have the income to pay their balances, and it makes their financial situation untenable. People start only paying the minimum required and this means they hardly ever are able to fully pay off their cards, another quick trip to the spinning laundry cycle of debt that’s impossible to get out of.

The Debt Consolidation Journey

At this point, people often seek out debt consolidation agencies, which can be very helpful, as they provide guidance through your journey into debt consolidation. Many consolidation agencies will help you come up with a way to pay off your debt and will work with you to eliminate your accumulated debt. Rebuilding your credit rating should be your goal here, and it’s very possible to get that done with the help of professionals.

However, one must be careful when searching through debt consolidation agencies. There are many sketchy companies when it comes to handling cash, and you can bet that these types of companies will have no problem taking advantage of you in your incredibly vulnerable state. Usually, these services shouldn’t be expensive, as they are paid by the creditors, not borrowers. Feel free to take full advantage of what they offer.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t seek to find the best debt consolidation agency for you, however. Set up with an agency that will give you the best deal for your certain needs, obviously. Don’t assume that every agency will offer the same basic services, because often they can differ on important details, and you will want to know exactly what each option can do for you and why the place you decide on is ultimately the best fit.

Make a shortlist of the options you find the most attractive and make sure to research each of them with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and the client testimonials (that they should have on their site if they are legit) before deciding.

Also, you should be comparing and contrasting the fees that each service will charge you. The goal here, of course, is to save money on interest from your credit debt, so it’s important to know that overall you will still be saving money.

Unfortunately, consolidation may have a negative impact on your credit rating. It’ll be a small, necessary blow though, because you can start to build up your credit after that in a way that you weren’t on track to do before. It’s best to take the slight loss and build back up.
