The payment is typically calculated from the individual’s estimation of their gross income. These payments must be made on time to the IRS in order to avoid complications and/or penalties.
Taxes can be filed together by married individuals. If someone is self-employed but their spouse is not, the spouse could cover the taxes for both people. In this situation, the self-employed spouse would not have to send a quarterly payment as the other spouse can pay for both taxpayers.
Self-Employment Tax
When employers withhold taxes from a paycheck, it is usually for a couple of different tax items, like state disability fees or Social Security. For self-employed individuals, these tax items are paid through self-employment (SE) tax. The SE tax is usually paid in April and covers both Medicare and Social Security fees. It is typically paid based on the self-employed individual’s personal business income.
Tax Deductions
Self-employed individuals who work from home can enjoy great benefits in tax deductions. Those who work in their homes can deduct their mortgage and utilities based on just how much space in the home is used specifically for work. Sometimes, home improvements related to work – like replacing an office chair for the home office – can also be covered as tax deductions.
Other deductions could include vehicle expenses if the self-employed individual travels for their business. Deductions for charitable contributions can also be received if you do volunteer or have donated a specific amount to a non-profit organization.
Keep in mind that laws and regulations regarding tax deductions constantly change, so it is suggested for self-employed individuals to discuss their taxes with a professional.
Income Records
To avoid problems, penalties, and/or complications, self-employed individuals should always document their income. For those who work for a company but are independent from the company, a 1099-MISC should be sent annually. Earnings can be reported through the 1099-MISC.
For those who who work for their own businesses or companies, it is suggested that the individual acquire an accounting software to keep track of their income, gains, and losses throughout the year.
